Hamamelis
Virginiana - The natural medicine
of the North American Indians |
- Hamamelis Virginiana
(also called Witch Hazel) contains active principles that are
among the most useful substances of today’s medical science.
Therapeutic applications include the treatment of chronic disorders,
stimulation of self-healing and normalization of cellular processes.
- Hamamelis is used mostly in the topical treatment of various
skin and mucosal affections, as a welcome alternative to cortisone-containing
preparations.
The healing powers of the „magic Virginia bush“ are
chiefly due to three groups of active substances:
- The first group includes the polyphenols, i.e. the tannins
and flavonoids. Acts as antioxidant, cell protection and protective
shield against UV irradiation
- The second group are the organic acids found in the leaves
of Hamamelis. They exert an anti-inflammatory effect.
- The third group are the volatile oils, can inhibit the growth
of microorganisms and also act as disinfectants.
